      Stoneybatter

Stoneybatter is in the northwest inner city between close to the Phoenix Park and Smithfield Market in Dublin 7.  Named one of Ireland’s coolest neighbourhoods in a global top list by Time Out magazine and you can totally see why. It offers great independent cafes, bars and restaurants. Home to several generations, with young families, professionals and students, this neighbourhood offers something for everyone. There is a great sense of community from the long-standing residents through to the young population in the new apartment developments. The Phoenix Park, Europe’s largest enclosed park is literally on the doorstep, and can be accessed locally through Parkgate street. It is walking distance from the city centre, and it is also served well by public transport. It is served by 37, 39, 39a, 70 bus routes and both the red and green Luas line are close by serving many parts of the city and beyond.   HISTORY & CULTURE It was once a working-class area right in in inner city where residents were employed in the nearby Guinness Brewery, Jameson Distillery and the Cattle Market on the North Circular Road. Manor Street was once an old highway and a Mulligans pub was once coach stop for travellers. Arbour Hill is a long-standing prison and military cemetery and the burial place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising.   EDUCATION There are four primary schools in the area. Brunswick CBS is a Catholic, boys School. Stanhope St. is a Catholic a mixed school for infants and senior girls. Dublin 7 Educate Together is multi-denominational, mixed school and St. Gabriel’s Catholic is a mixed primary school.  There are two secondary schools in the area with St. Joseph’s, Catholic, all-girls and St. Paul’s, Catholic, all boys schools. Grangegorman University campus has recently relocated to the area.   DINE & DRINKS  There are several pubs, restaurants and cafes in the area serving great food including two sushi bars and three vegan restaurants. Mulligan Grocer was one of the first Dublin pubs to serve craft beer seriously and offers modern Irish food in a friendly setting. Belfry pub is a recent addition, and a busy spot with a beer garden for younger crowds. The Glimmer Man is a proper Dublin pub with traditional ales and great Guinness. Walsh’s is a traditional Irish pub and was named Ireland’s Pub of the Year in 2018 and a must see for their great food and cosy setting. Grano is a popular family run Italian combining the best fresh ingredients to offer great contemporary Italian food. Love Supreme is considered to have the neighbourhood’s best coffee with the choice of gourmet pies, sausage rolls and toasties. Lilliput Stores has a wonderful coffee shop serving freshly prepared sandwiches, soups and stews.  They now offer small plates on Thursday and Friday evenings. Other healthy options to be checked out include Kale + Coco, V-face and Vietnom.   SHOPS  There are some wonderful boutiques on Manor Street with the chance to pick up some lovely gifts from local designers and artists in Moo Market. The Lilliput Press is a quaint little book shop and a must see!  For a weekly shop, there is a Tesco on Prussia Street, and a Lidl on the Old Cabra Road and Brunswick Street.   OTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD OFFERINGS   Jameson’s Distillery is Dublin’s home to some iconic spirits and brews and a go-to place for locals to enjoy an Irish whiskey.   Token is a cool vintage arcade, bar and restaurant which is a perfect spot to enjoy the best retro arcade games.
