      Rathgar

      Rathgar is a hugely sought after location in South Dublin. Located only 3km from the city centre this pretty village has great cafes, restaurants, boutiques and shops.  Housing is largely a mix of late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian with a more recent addition of modern apartment blocks and newly built houses. This leafy southside suburb of Dublin is one of the city's most desirable addresses with its tree-lined roads and nearby riverside walks. The Dodder and Bushy Park are right on the doorstep for those who enjoy the outdoors.     HISTORY & CULTURE The name originates from the Irish Rath Garbh, or "rough ringfort" has been in use since the 13th century and described the area bounded by the river Dodder to the south and to the north by the river Swan. The village remained prominently rural into the early 19th century and urbanisation came with the creation of the Rathmines Urban Township in 1847. Highfield Road was laid out in 1753, and this made the initial development of Rathgar.     EDUCATION The main school in the area is a private co-educational High School (primary and secondary). Stratford College is also a private co-educational primary and secondary school.   Rathgar National School, St Peter's Special School and St Michael's House Special School are all local primary school options.    Close by in Rathmines is St Louis which offers senior primary school from second to sixth class.  St Mary’s in Rathmines offers private primary and secondary education for boys.  
      DINE & DRINK There is no shortage of quality food options in Rathgar village with many restaurants, pubs and takeaway options available. Bijou is an all-time favourite for locals who can enjoy local produce with options of a heated terrace and cocktail bar in its European restaurant.   Beckett and Bull is a casual style restaurant offering great brunch, lunch and dinner options.   The Revolution are best known for their freshly made stone baked pizzas and cold beers and offers a selection of small dishes.   Howards Way offer extensive breakfast and lunch menus always with Fresh local ingredients combined with fine culinary expertise.  Mehek is a popular family run Indian restaurant with locals offering an extensive range of traditional Indian cuisine in an elegant setting.   The Bottlers bank offers a range of stouts, beers, lagers and a superb range of craft beers.  The 108 is a cosy pub with great food and an extensive drinks menu of local and imported beers.    SHOP Rathgar has a number of local shops including a small Supervalu supermarket right in its centre.  The Butler's Pantry branch on Rathgar Road offers tasty homemade meals, breads and desserts made daily using the finest Irish produce.   For a weekly shop, there is a Lidl located in Terenure village and a Dunnes Stores in the Swan centre in Rathmines just a short drive away.    Retailers also include a Centra, pharmacy, wine shops and antique shop.   OTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD OFFERINGS Rathgar Tennis and Bowling Club has 10 all-weather floodlit courts, a new practice wall and clubhouse and welcomes all new members.   Rathgar Hockey Club are a mixed club with men and women’s teams providing great fun, learning environment for members.
