Sandymount
Sandymount is a pretty seaside village in south Dublin, close to the city and popular with locals and visitors alike. It is a highly desirable place to live with an urban village feel and an attractive mix of Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian properties. The village has a good mix of gastropubs, cafes, boutiques and independent shops.
One big draw to the area is Sandymount Strand which stretches for approx. one kilometre along the Strand Road. The Promenade is popular for walking and provides outstanding views over Sandymount Strand to Poolbeg, Irishtown Nature Park and Dun Laoghaire.
Sandymount Green is a small triangular park located right in the heart of the village dating back to 1800s. Today it is a much-loved green space for families to enjoy a tranquil setting, surrounded by local businesses.
Sandymount is approx. a 40-minute walk to Stephen’s Green, and it is a short 10-minute trip on the Dart into town to Pearse Street station. This area is also served well by Dublin bus with the number 1 and 47 routes into the city centre. Nearby areas include Ringsend, Ballsbridge, and Irishtown.
HISTORY
Sandymount once had its own pier and swimming baths which were built in 1883 where the ruins are still visible today.
Back in the 18th century, the area was vastly an unpopulated area of shoreland known as ‘Brickfields’. This was dominated by an industrial brickworks, which turned the sand of the beach into bricks for the grand avenues of Georgian Dublin.
The sea wall was built around the start of the 19th century, and with this began the building of houses and wealthy Dubliners moving into the area.
EDUCATION
There are four primary schools in the area. Scoil Mhuire is a Catholic girl’s school. Star of the Sea Boy’s National School is a Catholic boy’s school. St Matthew’s is a mixed Church of Ireland school. Shellybank’s Educate Together is a mixed multidenominational.
Secondary schools include Sandymount Park Educate Together Secondary School, Marian College and St. Michael's College.
